Samsung Galaxy S10 models outsell Galaxy S9 series in the US during launch week

The latest flagship smartphones from Samsung feature the Snapdragon 855 chipset and a punch-hole display

A new report from research firm Counterpoint states that the new Samsung Galaxy S10 series managed to sell 16 percent more units in the first week of sales in the US, compared with the Galaxy S9 series in 2018. Out of the latest S10 trio, the Galaxy S10+ sold the highest number of units, whereas the standard S10 came in second and the S10e sold the least. However, it was thanks to the S10e sales that Samsung managed the 16 percent overall increase.

According to Counterpoint, the total sales of the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ weren’t that much higher compared to the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Most of the increase comes due to the addition of the smaller Galaxy S10e, which is probably one of the best small-sized phones available in the market today. The firm believes that the Galaxy S10 sales could help Samsung gain the number one spot in the US since 2017. It expects Samsung to ship over 40 million units of the S10 series this year.

The premium smartphone market in the US is currently led by Apple but that might change soon. Apple’s latest iPhones haven’t been doing well in the country, with predicted sales to be much below expectations. Jeff Fieldhack, Research Director at Counterpoint Research stated:

“The US is a key market for Samsung as this is where the majority of its premium smartphones are sold. The Galaxy S10e is not cannibalizing older models like the Galaxy S8 or the Galaxy S9. It is actually helping Samsung gain share.”

Counterpoint research is also working on a report to see if the new Galaxy S10 sales were due to customers switching over from Apple devices. This report should be ready once Apple releases its Q2 earnings report later this month. The new Galaxy S10 series offers a lot more than what Apple has to offer with the iPhone XS and XR. You get more cameras, more screen estate with slimmer bezels, better displays, larger battery and a lot more.
